1st day

Today was a big day. It was the 1st day of the rest of my.....2 years. Once I walked through these 2 doors I knew there was no turning back. Goodbye long leisurely lunches, so long daily shopping trips to Winners, farewell sweet cupcake making afternoons with Saucy. Hello Master's student Sassy,

Hello student lounges that haven't changed a chair in 15 years....
Hello hot chocolate machine filled with toxic waste.....

Hello late nights, early mornings, study dates, libraries and $175 text books.
Tips, advice greatly appreciated......I am terrified.

You will do fabulous!! Not to worry!

You have experience and wisdom and know who you are. Others there are just starting out and trying to figure out what they "want to be when they grow up" and have entered university for the social life.

You are kind, genuine and have an interest to learn.

Good luck and enjoy!

Oh, not goodbye to cupcake making, don't say it. It won't happen. You'll have time for that, surely. I've been through grad school and can give you some tips:

1. Pack your own thermos of hot cocoa. Keep a cold coke in your purse and you can get a decent coffee in the grad student lounge but you need to keep some Starbucks in your study carrel to make it yourself.

2. Do you have a snazzy bookbag? You might need one more stop at Winners.

3. If all else fails, call me. Chances are, I read, or maybe edited the material. I earned extra bucks that way. Quite a few of the reading packages still have my name on them.

You'll do great... we know it! Make sure you take some time for yourself and don't pile on too much pressure... it all happens as it is supposed to. Academics don't stress too much around that building, so why should you??

Now that you're a student and I'm a prof, is it ok that we had a baby together?

Wow those pics sure bring back memories. Make sure you pack your goldfish crackers and save room for a veggie sub at the buffeteria :) Hey I found a website/blog you might be interested in? It's Gwyneth Paltrow's website www.goop.com It's kind of neat so you should check it out!!

Wow it seems like yesterday we were there. I don't think the ed lounge had those high tables and chairs though. Don't forget the dill pickle chips or sweetarts with that veggie sub. Make sure you are always on time, you never know which profs will remember you!!!

Altho it has been eons since I was a student, it hasn't been eons since I taught upper-year university.

Tip #1: don't rely on spell check to proofread your papers. I'll never forget "Least we forget".

Tip #2: be extra careful if using sensitive words like "public" in a paper. No spell-check will pick up on pubic when you mean "public".

Tip #3: don't leave your research until last minute.

But most of all? Enjoy your classes as much as possible! It's the journey, not just the destination that matters!
